In the early 20th century, Mother Cabrini was asked to come to Colorado to minister to Italian immigrants working in the mines and along the railroads. She and her Missionary Sisters established the Queen of Heaven Orphanage in Denver and regularly visited immigrant families, offering care, education, and spiritual support. In 1912, Mother Cabrini purchased property in the foothills of Golden to serve as a summer camp for the orphaned girls—a place of rest, renewal, and joy.
Following her beatification in 1938 and canonization in 1946, the Golden property evolved into a place of prayer, pilgrimage, and devotion to Mother Cabrini and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today, Mother Cabrini Shrine welcomes visitors from around the world seeking reflection, inspiration, and connection.
The Shrine grounds include a chapel, museum, retreat center and hermitage, conference center and gift shop, Cabrini Garden, Meditation Walk, Rosary Garden, the Grotto, the Spring, and the pilgrim path leading to the Sacred Heart Statue and the Heart of Stones. Whether climbing the steps in quiet contemplation or pausing to take in sweeping views of the Front Range, visitors encounter both natural beauty and sacred space.
The Shrine celebrates weekly Mass in both English and Spanish and hosts retreats, seasonal celebrations, and special events throughout the year, creating opportunities for prayer, learning, and community. Guided by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Shrine continues its mission to provide a peaceful and welcoming environment where all are invited to experience God’s loving presence through prayer, reflection, and shared faith.
