Roots and Wings
Twenty-eight MSCs gathered at St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset, New York from May 31st to June 4th. It was the second MSC formation program of Roots and Wings.
Sr. Eileen Currie, MSC, was the presenter, who spoke from her experience of directing retreats and her work of spiritual direction. The content of Sr. Eileen’s presentations was focused on discernment and decision making in daily life.

Among the many pertinent points that were covered - these are only a few: It is crucial to have God at the center of our discernment, and to know what kind of God we are talking to. This is because our image of God is unique to each person. When we discern or make a decision it is important to follow the Scriptural model, wherein God initiates and the person responds. Discernment is the act of distinguishing between two or more good options while calling on God for assistance. Good decisions energize us, are made in freedom, are balanced and involve the whole person; sound decision making requires prayerful reflection. It is best to reflect with another person to avoid delusions. In the end, finding God’s will is a matter of making the best creative choice within a given set of circumstances. Logic is not enough, we need both mind and emotion.

In addition to the in-put given by Sr. Eileen, we also spent time in small and large group sharing, as well as quiet reflection on “where am I in my life now.” This exercise on the Seasons of My Life was very revealing to each person who recognized the positive and negative aspects of each phase.

All the sisters were very satisfied with the schedule. It left time to reflect, relax, and re-connect with one another. We were very grateful to Sr. Eileen for sharing her wisdom and experience.

Sr. Catherine Garry was also at hand to lead some evening discussions. The social hours were filled with laughter and food. Formation Office staffer Karol Brewer’s presence as coordinator of the program was greatly appreciated. She was with us these days to facilitate and make sure everything ran smoothly.
