Following the Provincial Assembly last week, New York area Cabrini and tourist sites were visited by staff from Cabrini Ministries, Swaziland and their Director, Sr. Barbara Staley.
On Thursday, October 22, Mzamo Sikondze, Administrative Assistant / Human Resources Trainee, and Thandiwe Maphunjwa, Director of Healthcare Outreach, were first guests of Mother Cabrini High School and St. Frances Cabrini Shrine, where they were able to connect with their longtime friend Sr. Speranza D’Ambrosi. They then came north along the Hudson River where Administrators and Staff from St. Cabrini Nursing Home hosted them for afternoon tea and a tour.
It was a beautiful fall day, where the autumn tree colors and the Hudson River proved to be a dramatic and different setting for these residents of sub-Saharan Africa to experience.
Following a greeting by Barbara Gaughan, Administrator; Lorraine Horgan, Vice President for External Affairs; and Sr. Regina Casey, Pastoral Care; an overview of the services of Cabrini of Westchester was given. A rich dialog occurred, where Mzamo and Thandiwe shared the scope of services provided by Cabrini Ministries in Swaziland, and their personal experiences of serving the many facets and needs of the mission there. Sr. Regina recounted the history of the Missionary Sisters’ presence in Swaziland since the early 1970s. Both Thandiwe and Mzamo expressed their gratitude for the presence of the Sisters in Swaziland, and acknowledged the thousands of lives saved as a result of the work of Cabrini Ministries there. A tour of St. Cabrini Nursing Home followed, where the visitors had the chance to speak with residents, staff and nurses, including some employees who are from various parts of Africa.
Of course, no visit to Dobbs Ferry would be complete without a visit with the Missionary Sisters in residence. After stopping in at Cabrini Immigrant Services, the whirlwind day came to a relaxing end with an enjoyable dinner -- with the Hudson River as the backdrop.
