During Advent this year, four Missionary Sisters have prayerfully reflected on the readings for each week and chosen one on which to share thoughts. This week’s reflection is by Sr. Frances Xavier Brogan, MSC. These short reflections challenge us as we prepare in waiting for Christ's coming.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 21, 2008
Psalm 89: 2-3, 4-5, 27, 28
Romans 16: 25-27
Luke 1: 26-38
As I ponder the reading’s of today’s liturgy (12/21/2008 – 4th Sunday of Advent), the first thing that comes to mind are the opening words of the Constitutions of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart: “The name, Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, expresses a way of life, we are to be bearers of the love of Christ in the world.”
“Jesus, just as in today’s reading, you called David and Mary to what must have seemed to them at the time an impossible task, you have also called me to that same task - to prepare a place for your love to grow. Never having been out in the fields as a shepherd like David, I am not quite sure how he felt, but like Mary, as a young girl from a simple home, you called me. So, as I look forward to these last days of Advent and the celebration of your coming among us, may I continue, as did David and Mary, to prepare in myself a temple for your love to abide and grow. May your love be accessible through me to all whom I encounter in daily life. Together then, we will help fulfill the words of the psalm: “love is built to last forever.'”
