Cabrini Health – Australia
Malvern, Australia
From Top: Cabrini Hospital Malvern, Cabrini Ashwood, Cabrini Brighton, Cabrini Hawthorn, Cabrini Hopetown, and Cabrini Prahran
In January, 1948, ten Missionary Sisters arrived in Melbourne from Rome to assume ownership of St. Benedict’s, a small hospital in the suburb of Malvern. So successful were the Sisters that, ten years later in 1958, St. Benedict’s was replaced by a much larger hospital - one bearing the name of the mission’s Founder, Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini.

The new hospital, opened by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Daniel Mannix, was based on the model of the Institute’s hospitals in the USA and employed lay people who worked side by side with the Sisters. Little did the Sisters know that the future would witness the growth of a much larger organization well beyond the boundaries of a single hospital.

Known today as Cabrini Health, this healthcare provider comprises two acute care hospitals, a rehabilitation hospital, a palliative care center and a residential home and an administrative facility.

Cabrini Hospital Malvern – on the site of the former St. Benedict’s, the 446 bed hospital provides Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Day Oncology, Pediatrics, Maternity, a Day Procedure Center and Operating Suite of 13 theatres. Located at the hospital is the Cabrini Institute, the organization’s clinical research and education arm, and Foundation 49, the health promotion team.

Cabrini Brighton – A community hospital serving the Melbourne’s Bayside suburbs, the facility is currently undergoing major redevelopment due for completion in 2009. The ‘new’ 88- bed hospital will focus on women’s health, cancer and specialty surgery. It will house Day Oncology, High Dependency and Endoscopic Units; five operating theatres and 3-stage Post Anesthetic Care Unit; a Sleep Clinic and medical imaging, pathology and hospital pharmacy services.

Cabrini Hopetoun – the latest addition to the Cabrini Health organization, this rehabilitation hospital provides in-patient or out-patient programs - or a combination of both - according to individual needs. The 30-bed hospital offers quiet, comfortable accommodation in private rooms with ensuites. A comprehensive team approach ensures all patients receive individual care and attention in readiness for their return home.

Cabrini Ashwood – A 90-bed continuing care facility responds to the needs of individuals who can no longer live at home independently. Personal care is provided around the clock in addition to physiotherapy, podiatry and recreational therapy. Popular activity programs engage residents throughout the year.

Cabrini Prahran – A unique service, this 22-bed center provides care for patients of all ages with a life-threatening illness. Holistic in approach, Cabrini Prahran aims to meet the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and their families. The Palliative Home Care Service operates from the Center and provides care to patients within their own homes.

Cabrini Hawthorn – This multi-faceted site is the home of Cabrini’s Financial Services Department, the Cabrini Linen Service and the head office and main workshop for Chemtronics Biomedical Engineering.
