Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Bringing Christ's love to the world
The Feast of the Sacred Heart was observed with a celebratory Mass, renewal of vows and a festive day! The day began with the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and ended with a great meal with friends of the Shrine and the sisters.
How good the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to us!
This is the month of love; love ought to transform us all.
~ Travels: 9.1.1895 – New Orleans to Panama
In her communion of love, Mother Cabrini united herself with the desire of Jesus to save humanity according to His plan of salvation. A fundamental element in her spirituality was her zeal for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Those who love Jesus are happy when He is loved by others, and at the same time, they desire their own love to grow.
On this day the Missionary Sisters renew their sacred vows and Cabrini Lay Missionaries renew their commitment. Zeal inspires an MSC to action so that others may come to know and to dwell in God’s love. This zeal is clothed in divine mercy in fidelity to Jesus’ teachings.

May God continue to bless our MSCs and CLMs for their zeal and faithfulness.
Cabrini High School students Asia Satcher and Jillian Wohlgemuth received the St. Timothy Service Award from the Archdiocese of New Orleans for service in the community.
Cabrini Senior classmates Satcher and Wohlgemuth were both recognized for their volunteer service of others in the Greater New Orleans community. Archbishop Gregory Aymond made the presentation of the awards during a ceremony at the St. Louis Cathedral
Asia Satcher received her award in recognition of her service as a member of Cabrini’s campus ministry team, and as an altar server, lector and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at her parish, St. Mary of the Angels. She also served for several years on both the IMANI team and Teen CROSS.
Jillian Wohlgemuth received her award in recognition of her service as a member of Cabrini’s Student Council leadership team and represented at the LASC as an officer in her parish CYO, St. Christopher the Martyr Parish in Metairie. She was also a delegate at Teen CROSS and CLI, and a member of the victory corps volunteers at the World War II Museum in New Orleans.
On Monday, May 2, Cabrini hosted the 27th annual Cabrini Classic golf tournament at a new venue: St. Davids Golf Club in Wayne, PA.
More than 70 alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and community members participated in the student aid fundraising event—a day of golf, dinner, cocktails, and a silent auction.
“All the proceeds are for our students and supporting our students in their mission,” said Cabrini Board Chairman John Schanz, Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer for Comcast Cable.
“Cabrini is an institution that has local vision, and has international vision.
We care about the integrity of every human being,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Steve Highsmith (’88). “We also care very much about our students; we’re student-centered.”
Program emcee Dan Luner (’16), a senior Communication major, also spoke about Cabrini’s student-centric mission.
“To me, Cabrini will always represent a second chance,” he said. “Cabrini had everything I was looking for: a hands-on Communication program, the ability to commute to school, but, most importantly, a small school with big results.”
“It’s exciting times at Cabrini,” said Cabrini President Donald B. Taylor, PhD. “We’ve been approved by Pennsylvania Department of Education: Officially, as of July 1, we will be Cabrini University. Our vision, ever since the institution opened 59 years ago, was to provide access to a mission-driven education for first-generation students from modest means and to meet learners wherever they are.
“Thank you for your generosity, donating and doing everything you can to help us meet the needs of our students. Thank you for all that you do on behalf of Cabrini.” ~
Since his arrival, Cabrini College PresidentDr. Donald Taylor has inaugurated the tradition of spring and fall Campus Beautification Days. This week, faculty and staff fanned out across campus to plant shrubs and colorful annuals and perennials in anticipation of the College’s Commencement this weekend. This year’s class will be the last to graduate from Cabrini College, which will become a university on July 1, 2016.
Cabrini High School faculty members prepared and served dinners for the residents of Ronald McDonald House representing the Cabrini Cares service program.
Cabrini faculty members Mary Cordeiro, Caitlin Duplantier, Kasey Laird ’08, Paul Distler, and Jen Cabrera, donated the food and their time to support the families at the New Orleans’ Ronald McDonald House and ensure they were properly fed and nourished.
The group prepared, served, and cleaned up after the families of cancer-stricken children who reside at Ronald McDonald House while their children receive cancer treatment. The Cabrini faculty members worked to create a well-balanced meal and to lessen the burden of those families struggling who often lack the time or resources to cook.
Since the launch of the new Mother Cabrini website in February of 2015, the MSC Communications Office, in tandem with the Stella Maris Province Vocation Promotion Team, has been working on the production of new promotional materials that compliment the graphic design and messaging of the updated province website.
Thanks to this collaborative effort, a new brochure, designed to reflect the colors and style of the www.mothercabrini.org website, are currently being printed and are scheduled for delivery early next week.
Additionally, a brief video, intended as a compliment to the printed materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the life and ministries of the Missionary Sisters, has been produced and will be featured on the MSC website and on social media.
We have linked the video for download so that Missionary Sisters and all Cabrini ministries are invited to use the video for occasions such as new employee orientations; student recruitment fairs; opening reflections at board and staff meetings; introductory protocols at special events and, most certainly, as a way of inviting young women to consider their life’s vocation as a Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Special thanks to Gina Scarpello, Director of Cabrini Mission Corps, and CMC missioner Ashley Block for lending their video and photographic talent and expertise to make the video a reality.
Cabrini High School’s Science Squad visited St. Rosalie School in Harvey, LA to introduce their students to some interesting science experiments.
Cabrini Science Instructors, Kathy Gosciniak and Lisa Surgi with the assistance of Cabrini students who are St. Rosalie alumnae Miranda Musacchia’17, and Angelle Falcon’17, led sixty members of Ms. Rotolo’s fifth grade science classes in a series of scientific tests on the properties of various toothpastes.
The Science Squad performed a series of physical tests on toothpastes, their ingredients and properties, including color/smell, abrasiveness, fluoride content, pH, and foaming properties. The young St. Rosalie “scientists” worked in pairs, utilizing stereoscopes, testing different brands of toothpaste. After the testing, the students shared their data with other pairs, compiling the data to create a more comprehensive database. The results of their research indicated there was little difference in the outcome among the five toothpaste brands tested, specifically not significant to justify the price differential among the brands.
“We received a positive response from Julie Rotolo the 4th grade teacher at St. Rosalie, as she was surprised with the amount of testing that could be done within one class period,” noted Cabrini AP Chemistry/Chemistry Instructor Kathy Gosciniak. She continued, “the St. Rosalie students seemed to really enjoy the activity, so we hope this simple demonstration will help to spark their curiosity and interest in science.”
Pope Francis asked: “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?”
Cabrini College students have worked all [this academic year] to answer that question!
This year, 44 Cabrini College students made their voices heard in Congress in support of brothers and sisters around the world. Thanks to all of you for your hard work and heart-felt effort!
Working with Catholic Relief Services and CRS University, Cabrini College students made more than 100 lobby visits on behalf of Syrian Refugees, migrants, mothers and children, in support of life-saving health solutions, economic development, and above all, human dignity.
Their work paid off, for example, with the Green Climate Fund, aid for Syrian refugees and unaccompanied minors, and the foreign aid budget. In December, the US Congress passed a $1 trillion budget. The $500 million down payment to the Green Climate Fund, for which the students lobbied was included! The Poverty-Focused Development Assistance also received a slight increase.
The voices of Cabrini College students played a role by going to Capitol Hill and by working on campus to get students, faculty, and staff to sign 400+ letters to members of Congress.
Well done, ECG 100 and ECG 300 students and CRS Ambassadors, and CMC missioners!
On April 15, 2016, Sr. Barbara Staley, MSC, General Superior, and Sr. Bernadette Anello, MSC, General Councilor, attended a private Mass with Pope Francis.
Sr. Barbara shares the following thoughts…
“It’s almost too sacred to write about. Today, [April 15] I attended Mass at Santa Martha’s, the Pope’s private mass with about 50 people in attendance. After the Mass I had the great honor to greet His Holiness, to shake his hand, to receive his Papal blessing. When I mentioned Mother Cabrini, he responded with joy and said “Brava!” I thanked him for his example of being Christ and for loving the poor, immigrants and refugees.”
Sr. Bernadette remarked:
“the experience was unforgettable for both Sr. Barbara and myself. Words fail…but the memories remain.”
Sr. Bernadette added:
“[Pope Francis’] smile upon receiving these gifts [presented by Sr. Barbara] was worth a thousand words…”
