Even before the sun was up on Wednesday, December 6th, 18 community members, staff and volunteers from Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) boarded a bus to Washington, DC to demand that Congress pass a Clean Dream Act and protect TPS (Temporary Protected Status).
Since the announcement on September 5th that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be ending, members of CIS-NYC’s Justice for Immigrants program have been marching in the streets, making phone calls, sharing their stories in press and social media, and doing everything we can to ensure that our Dreamers are protected. On December 6th, we joined around 600 other New Yorkers from the New York Immigration Coalition and thousands of advocates from around the country in Washington, DC for a rally. Before the rally one of our young members, Carlos, shared his story with press and other attendees. He discussed his dreams of continuing his education and becoming a lawyer and emphasized the importance of passing a Dream Act now to protect Dreamers such as himself.
This is a critical moment for Dreamers and for TPS. Everyday 122 DACA recipients lose their work permits and protection from deportation. The lives of 300,000 TPS recipients and their families hang in limbo. Immigrant families deserve to enjoy their holidays without fear of deportation and separation. If you would like to join us in the fight for a Dream Act you can help by calling your members of Congress at 215-874-6784.
