DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, immigrants and migrants have provided the labor that drives New York City’s economy\, the families that fill its neighborhoods\, and the creativity that animates its culture. \nJoin us at the Shrine at 7 pm (or streamed on our Facebook page) for an illustrated lecture by Robert W. Snyder\, Manhattan Borough Historian and professor emeritus at Rutgers University\, (photo above) about the generations of new arrivals who have made and remade New York\, from the nineteenth century (when Mother Cabrini arrived from Italy) to the present. The lecture will devote special attention to what recent census figures tell us about the enduring importance of immigrants and migrants in New York City. \nRobert W. Snyder is author of many books including Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York and the coauthor of All the Nations Under Heaven: Immigrants\, Migrants and the Making of New York. He is a member of the New York Academy of History.

SUMMARY:National Migration Week  - September 20 - 26
DESCRIPTION:nearly a half century\, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week\, which is an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants\, including immigrants\, refugees\, children\, and victims and survivors of human trafficking. \nNational Migration Week for 2021 takes place September 20-26\, and will climax with the Vatican’s celebration of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR)\, which always falls on the last Sunday of September. The primary theme for this year’ WDMR is “Towards an ever wider ‘WE’”. In his letter announcing this year’s theme\, Pope Francis emphasizes that “this focus calls on us to ensure that ‘after all this\, we will think no longer in terms of ‘them’ and ‘those\,’ but only ‘us’’ (Fratelli tutti\, no. 35). And this universal us must become a reality first of all within the Church which is called to cultivate communion in diversity.” \nIn solidarity with the Vatican\, National Migration Week will use the same theme as WDMR – “Towards an ever wider WE’ – but will emphasize the particular ways in which this theme and its application to the migration question is important for the Catholic Church in the United States. DESCRIPTION:On July 7th we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Canonization of Mother Cabrini.\nFollowing the exhaustive Vatican processes of beatification and canonization\, Mother Cabrini was declared Blessed on November 13\, 1938\, and on July 7\, 1946\, Mother Cabrini  became  the first United States citizen to be canonized a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. \nIn the book\, “Immigrant Saint” The Life of Mother Cabrini” by Pietro Di Donato\, he writes of the canonization day\, “On July 7\, 1946\, St. Peter’s wore a holiday appearance. It’s venerable and imposing pillars were decked with magnificent ancient damask hangings. Countless electric lights and candles were grouped around the pontifical altar…paintings depicting Mother Cabrini hung from the balconies. The activities in the Vatican began just after seven in the morning\, when the Cardinals\, patriarchs\, Archbishops and other dignitaries who were to participate in the canonization began to arrive at the Sistine Chapel. Pope Pius XII entered the Sistine Chapel and intoned the Ave Maris Stella. \n“The Pope made the following solemn declaration in Latin: “…we inscribe in the Catalogue of the Saints\, the blessed Francesca Xavier Cabrini\, ordaining that her memory be celebrated in the universal church on the Day of December 22\, in the name of the Father\, Son and Holy Ghost.’” \nIn his homily the Pope said of Mother Cabrini\, “Although her constitution was very frail\, her spirit was endowed with such singular strength that\, knowing the will of God in her regard\, she permitted nothing to impede her from accomplishing what seemed to be beyond the strength of a woman.” ~excerpt from “Immigrant Saint” The Life of Mother Cabrini by Pietro Di Donato \n“Religious leader\, business administrator and spokesperson for the downtrodden\, Mother Cabrini was always a woman of compassion. This total and unabashed trust in God was her outstanding personality characteristic and was the source of an inner strength\, which propelled her to remarkable accomplishments in a relatively short amount of time. Some saw in Cabrini the embodiment of immigrant aspirations: to get ahead\, to excel\, to prove one’s self. DESCRIPTION:This year\, the COVID-19 pandemic poses an additional threat to refugees and displaced people\, who are among the most vulnerable. My recent Policy Brief on COVID-19 and People on the Move called on governments to ensure that they are included in all response and recovery efforts. \n  \n \n  \n  \nUN Secretary-General António Guterres\n2020 Theme: Every Action Counts\nThe COVID-19 pandemic and the recent anti-racism protests have shown us how desperately we need to fight for a more inclusive and equal world: a world where no one is left behind. It has never been clearer that all of us have a role to play in order to bring about change. Everyone can make a difference. This is at the heart of UNHCR’s World Refugee Day campaign. This year\, we aim to remind the world that everyone\, including refugees\, can contribute to society and Every Action Counts in the effort to create a more just\, inclusive\, and equal world. \nBackground\nEvery minute 20 people leave everything behind to escape war\, persecution or terror. There are several types of forcibly displaced persons: \nRefugees\nA refugee is someone who fled his or her home and country owing to “a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race\, religion\, nationality\, membership in a particular social group\, or political opinion”\, according to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention. Many refugees are in exile to escape the effects of natural or human-made disasters. \nAsylum Seekers\nAsylum seekers say they are refugees and have fled their homes as refugees do\, but their claim to refugee status is not yet definitively evaluated in the country to which they fled. \nInternally Displaced Persons\nInternally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are people who have not crossed an international border but have moved to a different region than the one they call home within their own country. \nStateless Persons\nStateless persons do not have a recognized nationality and do not belong to any country. \nStatelessness situations are usually caused by discrimination against certain groups. Their lack of identification — a citizenship certificate — can exclude them from access to important government services\, including health care\, education or employment. \nReturnees\nReturnees are former refugees who return to their own countries or regions of origin after time in exile. Returnees need continuous support and reintegration assistance to ensure that they can rebuild their lives at home. \nUN Action

DESCRIPTION:CLMs Await the Feast of the Sacred Heart \nIt is with great excitement that we look forward to celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 11th. Not only is this day special to the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart (MSCs) but it is also a day that the Cabrini Lay Missionaries (CLMs) renew their commitments. This year\, two of our CLMs\, Adela Jarquin and Marianne McGowan\, will be renewing their commitment for three more years! In addition to these renewals\, we are blessed to have five people who will be making their initial commitment as a CLM! \nThis past year\, a year of initial formation\, those interested in becoming a CLM\, have met monthly as a group. We had presentations about Mother Cabrini\, the Institute\, the different missions of the MSCs\, the spirituality of the Sacred Heart and a discussion about the book\, In Weakness\, Strength by Segundo Galilea. \nWe have candidates from Pennsylvania\, New York and Guatemala. It has been an exciting year as we learned about different cultures and the different ministries that everyone is involved in as well as having our meetings in English and Spanish. \nPlease keep all of us in your prayers as we prepare for a special celebration on June 11th.

(CNS photo/Hannah McKay\, pool via Reuters) \nVATICAN CITY (CNS) — Praising those who help the sick and praying for those who are sick\, Pope Francis called on Christians to practice what they preach\, including by guaranteeing equal access to health care for all people. \n“The current pandemic has exacerbated inequalities in our health care systems and exposed inefficiencies in the care of the sick\,” the pope wrote in his message for the 2021 World Day of the Sick\, which the Catholic Church marks Feb. 11\, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has made it obvious to everyone that “elderly\, weak and vulnerable people are not always granted access to care\,” at least not in an equitable way\, he said. “This is the result of political decisions\, resource management and a greater or lesser commitment on the part of those holding positions of responsibility.” \n“Investing resources in the care and assistance of the sick is a priority linked to the fundamental principle that health is a primary common good\,” Pope Francis wrote in his message\, which was released by the Vatican Jan. 12. \nThe papal message\, using Jesus’ denunciation of hypocrisy in Matthew 23:1-12\, insisted that real faith leads to real care for all who suffer from illness\, poverty or injustice. \n“When our faith is reduced to empty words\, unconcerned with the lives and needs of others\, the creed we profess proves inconsistent with the life we lead\,” the pope wrote. “The danger is real.” \nWhen another person is suffering\, he said\, Jesus “asks us to stop and listen\, to establish a direct and personal relationship with others\, to feel empathy and compassion\, and to let their suffering become our own as we seek to serve them.” \nBeing sick makes one realize his or her “own vulnerability and innate need of others\,” the pope said. “It makes us feel all the more clearly that we are creatures dependent on God.” \n“When we are ill\,” he continued\, “fear and even bewilderment can grip our minds and hearts; we find ourselves powerless\, since our health does not depend on our abilities.” \nFor many people\, the pope said\, “sickness raises the question of life’s meaning\,” something Christians must “bring before God in faith. In seeking a new and deeper direction in our lives\, we may not find an immediate answer. Nor are our relatives and friends always able to help us in this demanding quest.” \nLike Job in the Bible\, people must stick with their prayers\, crying out to God for help\, he said. \nIn the end\, God “confirms that Job’s suffering is not a punishment or a state of separation from God\, much less as sign of God’s indifference\,” he said. DESCRIPTION:In 1997\, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too\, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church. \nWorld Day for Consecrated Life is celebrated on February 2nd however\, it is observed in parishes on the Sunday after February 2nd. In 2021\, this day will be celebrated in parishes February 6-7\, 2021. \n“This then is the consecrated life: praise which gives joy to God’s people\, prophetic vision that reveals what counts. Consecrated life is not about survival\, it is not about preparing ourselves for ars bene moriendi: this is the temptation of our days\, in the face of declining vocations. No\, it is not about survival\, but new life. “But… there are only a few of us…” – it’s about new life. It is a living encounter with the Lord in his people. It is a call to the faithful obedience of daily life and to the unexpected surprises from the Spirit.
