Last week at Cabrini Health we celebrated the positive contribution made by refugees and asylum seekers. At the same time, it was an opportunity to promote understanding between the different cultures that make up Australian society. The week also focused on promoting tolerance while offering a spirit of compassion and welcome to those who have been forced to leave their homelands, often through no fault of their own.
Each year, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world are forced to seek refuge in foreign lands, many risking their lives in the hope of a better future for themselves and their families.
Much of the work of Mother Cabrini involved providing assistance to those immigrants who had left their homelands to make a new life for themselves in the United States. This is one of the reasons why she was declared the Patron Saint of Immigrants.
Today, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus conduct Cabrini Immigrant Services providing practical assistance to immigrants and those seeking refuge in the United States from around the world.
In Australia, Cabrini Health is an important partner with Centacare Catholic Family Services providing settlement assistance to refugees and displaced people through a range of innovative programs and services.
“Our Cabrini Family today is challenged on many levels: the cry of the poor and the excluded, the suffering of children and elderly at risk, the disintegration of the family and the disorientation of youth, the tragedy of so many of our immigrant and refugee brothers and sisters, the exploitation of women and human trafficking...”

Here at Cabrini Health, a number of prayer vigils have been held during the past week in the Chapel at Cabrini Malvern.
Sr. Angie Randazzo, MSC, who is with us from the United States was struck by the spirit of the people working here at Cabrini Health. She was moved by the “concern, love and compassion of Cabrini staff for refugees and the willingness to assist in any way they can.”
She believes Mother Cabrini would be so proud of the good work being done here, not only through the health care mission, but also through concern for the dispossessed and refugees.
Thanks to the Cabrini Health Pastoral Services Team for organizing these moving events.
