Ariel Estigoy looked very frail and sickly, quiet, and very shy, when we first met him five years ago at the age of 11. He is the 6th of the 8 children of farmers from La Trinidad. His mother was very happy and excited when she learned that we wanted to help Ariel to continue his studies.
For a couple whose combined daily income is only $10 a day, education and health for their children would be their last priorities. Since that day five years ago, Ariel became a scholar of SOSCFI. The Saturday supplemental feeding and tutorial activities given to them helped him rebuild his confidence. He gained friends and learned to keep the good ones and avoiding those whom he thinks would be a bad influence on his future.
He has become wiser. His participation in the last 4 summer camps and recollection activities also taught him to be a leader in his own right. He is respected by the other children because of his leadership, and on top of this, he is known for his intelligence and love for God. Ariel is also one of lucky ones chosen by Konseho ng Sining ng Baguio (Council of Artists of Baguio City) to participate in their Painting and Arts Classes. He has participated in three of the special Arts Exhibits for children in 2008 and 2009. Truly, Ariel has been transformed from a shy and quiet little boy to a responsible leader with so much humility, always making himself available to teach his skills and knowledge to the younger children of SOSCFI.
These qualities of Ariel earned the approval of the Board of Museo Pambata (Children’s Museum) to have his life story published in their forthcoming Book of Young Filipino Heroes. Ariel, together with a young girl from Ifugao Province have been unanimously chosen to inspire other Filipino children with their life stories focusing on their dreams and determination to succeed; love of God; respect of parents and elders; and selfless service to others.
Ariel is very happy that his young life story will be printed in a book to be read by Filipino children. He hopes that his life story will touch the readers especially the children whose hopes and dreams in life depend on so many things which they do not have such as money, car, nice clothing, a big house, expensive schools and even food. The book aims to awaken the heroic spirit in all children and motivate them to do noble deeds for other children in need, while at the same time working hard for their own dreams.
Ariel’s family, teachers, friends and the entire SOSCFI is very proud of this wonderful opportunity given to him. This coming weekend, Ariel shall be graduating from high school and would like to see himself enrolling in college in June, the first step he needs to become a teacher – his ultimate dream in life.
