2010 Lenten Reflections by Missionary Sisters - Third Sunday of Lent - March 7

During Lent, the Missionary Sisters will share a brief reflection. The reflection for the third week in Lent is by Sr. Regina Peterson, MSC.

Reflection for Third Sunday in Lent – March 7, 2010

Ex 3:1-8a, 13-15/1 Cor 10:1-6, 10-12/Lk 13:1-9 (30)

The book of Exodus brings me back to images of Moses' call. The first part of his call is to realize he is standing on HOLY GROUND. Then, in the stillness and awe he listens beyond his expectations and wonderment, to hear a summons to bring God's elect out of bondage to a land “flowing with milk and honey.” Then God does an extraordinary thing - in the ancient tradition, when someone gives you a name by which to call her or him, that someone gives you a measure of control over her or himself - God tells Moses “I Am who I Am ... and by this name I shall be invoked for all generations.”

Paul reminds me this was not enough for the people. Though they followed Moses out of Egypt and into the desert, “their faith and trust was challenged in the wilderness, and most of them failed (to remain faithful and) to please God. Their corpses littered the desert.” Paul further reminds me “... this is written down to be a lesson ... be careful that you do not fall. ... fall by arrogance, by conceit, by willfulness ...”

As I look around at the continued reminders of pain, death and devastation experienced by many due to recent natural disasters or perpetrated by wars and other acts of hostility at home and throughout the world, I hear Jesus speak to me as to the people of his day: Do you suppose these people were more guilty than you or others who are living today? They were not ... but I give you this call to repentance:

change your heart ... not your garments ... I have made a covenant with you, and you are mine ... I pledge myself to you ... to listen when you call - when you call to me with all your heart. This is the moment … listen beyond your own expectations; listen with all of your heart:
look around you and see ... recognize that you are standing in my vineyard ... you are standing on HOLY GROUND.

Hearing this I tremble and silently pray: but who am I?” And the God of all responds simply, “I shall be with you.”
