Cabrini Spotlights Giulia Oggioni: A Rare Au Pair
Giulia Oggioni
Bright eyed, big hearted and bursting with enthusiasm…that’s our Giulia from Milan, Italy. Giulia is an au pair who is living and working with a host family who emigrated from Ireland. On sunny days we often see Giulia strolling down Cedar Street, nine year old Campbell on her left and eight year old Killian on her right, heading off to the local Dobbs Ferry Public Library for a homework session or special story hour. The look on their faces tells us all that this is indeed a happy threesome.

Here at Cabrini Immigrant Services we have decided that having Giulia around makes us happy as well. She is a colorful participant in her ESL classes where she is not too shy to lead a book discussion or respectfully challenge another student’s response to a question. An observer of the Wednesday knitting and conversation group quickly understands that at the heart of every good discussion is a leader whose interest in others is truly genuine. Our leader is Giulia.

Giulia says that she wants to “pay back” for the services she is receiving at Cabrini. Take a look at Giulia’s “pay back” activities. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings she tutors Sandra, a beginning English speaker from Bogata, Colombia. On Wednesday afternoons she teaches Italian to Andrea, one of our volunteer tutors from Germany. And on Thursday mornings Giulia herself receives instruction in Spanish conversation from an ESL student, Monica, who is of Japanese and Peruvian descent. Giulia’s accomplishments are amazing!

Even though Giulia loves it here in the United States and especially the hustle and bustle of downtown Manhattan, for Giulia, home is still where her heart is. In one of her recent writing pieces she remembers with great fondness, her kitchen back home in Milan. Giulia says, “From where I sat in the kitchen I could see my mom making coffee and as usual, she was making small cups for everyone.” This message radiated warmth that all of us were able to share. As we listened, we too were in that kitchen with Giulia waiting for our own cup of mama’s delicious coffee.

Giulia returns to Milan in August and when she goes, we’ll miss her very, very much.
